The key purpose of the position isto plan and perform Hardware in the Loop Test Development, Test Conduction andTest Reporting using the Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL)Hardware-in-the-Loop facility (HWIL) to verify the integrated avionics system forthe Space Launch System (SLS) at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

Responsible to provide services andsupport for the Avionics and Ground Systems Test Branch (ES53) for the SpaceLaunch System (SLS) program. This branch is responsible for maintenance,fabrication, integration, operation, assembly, and testing of project hardwareand software. Provide test support to the Avionics and Ground Systems TestBranch for programs and projects. This support will be conducted within anexisting operational Government owned and managed facility housed at MSFC. Alltask support shall comply with the Avionics and Ground Systems Test BranchOrganizational Work Instructions (OWIs) and safety procedures. Personnel willbe required to be active participants in MSFC’s safety program andInternational Standards Organization (ISO). Work processes are governed byAvionics and Ground Systems Test Branch OWIs. Personnel will be required tostay up-to-date on all required training, abide by branch Job Hazard Analyses(JHAs) and attend branch safety meetings.

This is a senior level positionthat requires broad technical capability to perform Test Development, TestConduction and Test Reporting of real-time HWIL systems, as well as goodproject management skills to define and plan the activities. Tracking andreporting progress and timely completion of milestones is essential. Problemsolving and troubleshooting, including hands-on use of test equipment will berequired. Develop and Execute Simulation based Tests. Provide engineering/scientistsupport to augment a team of Government engineers.

  • Participatein defining verification/validation information such as Detailed Verification Objectivesand success criteria.

  • Writetechnical documents including test plans, procedures and reports to addressverification requirements.

  • Reviewprogram/project documents and provide relevant comments from a testperspective.

  • Developand use data reduction and manipulation tools.

  • Developand perform test procedures, including pre-test setups such as instrumentation,data acquisition, software loading/configuration and post-test activities suchas data archiving and data analysis

  • Assistin producing integrated schedules, management reports and budget reports.

  • Produce,archive, and distribute test data as appropriate to support verificationclosure.

  • Evaluatetest data to correlate with test findings and investigate potential anomalies.

  • Participatein or conduct meetings in support of the above activities.

  • Developtest scripts in the Python scripting language.

  • Familiarwith Linux and Windows environments.

  • Familiarwith XML and C programming syntax.

These activities will be on-goingas the launch vehicle architecture matures and the SLS program completesprogram phases, reviews and schedule milestones.


Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D., with a minimum 14 years of experience, Masters with at least 18 years of experience, or BS with at least 20 years of experience.

A minimum 5 years of experience usingsimulation in HWIL systems testing is also required.

Demonstrated expertise in:

  • Analysis of Requirements and Design Verification Objectives for Testabilityand Test Development

  • Developmentof optimized test plans and procedures

  • Troubleshootingand testing in support of distributed computing and simulation of launchvehicle and spacecraft systems

  • Abilityto work as part of a team or as an individual contributor

  • Travel may be required, but expected to be no more than5%.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Officeproducts including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to perform hands-on integration and troubleshootingsupport, including proficiency with basic lab hardware and software diagnostictools.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).


Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
