This opportunity will provide systems engineering, requirementsmanagement, verification and validation (V&V) coordination, andelement/system level integration support to the MSFC Systems Requirements &Verification Branch (EV73) for the Space Launch System (SLS) Spacecraft PayloadIntegration and Evolution (SPIE) Office, and to the MSFC Systems Engineeringand Integration Division (EV70).

The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with SPIE OfficeElement Chief Engineer and the Element Lead Systems Engineer, as well asparticipate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies. The candidate will supply leadership and/orsupport for the development of key systems engineering products for theIntegrated Spacecraft and Payload Element (ISPE), support program/projectmilestones, and subsequent activities where these products are assessed andmatured.

System engineering support that will be provided and performed by thecandidate includes:

  • Lead and/or supportelement and/or subsystem design trades and analysis necessary to validate the requirements,maintain control of the design baseline, and continually track compliance ofthe design to the requirements during design, development, testing andevaluation.

  • Lead and/or supportthe development of key systems engineering products for ISPE Element to supportprogram/project milestones and the subsequent activities where these productsare assessed and matured.

  • Evaluate PrimeContractor deliverables including requirements and specifications as well asverification of allocated end item specification requirements.

  • Develop integratedschedules and other tracking mechanisms to manage the work and identify risksand opportunities.

  • Develop SLS SPIEV&V planning products, methodology, and processes, including:

  • Definingverification requirements, verification planning, verification implementation,compliance assessment, requirement closure and validation implementation.

  • Providing V&Vplanning, execution, coordination, and integration for ISPE systems/subsystems.

  • Performing verticalintegration among vehicle-level, element, subsystem and component products.

  • Performinghorizontal integration with other elements to ensure consistency across theprogram.

  • Developing and maintaining Detailed VerificationObjectives (DVOs), as well as a V&V database

  • Communicate issues,best practices, lessons-learned and other technical positions related tosystems engineering, requirement management, and V&V practices andprocedures.

  • Assist in definingand developing flight evaluation strategies, flight data analysis (FDA), flighttest objectives (FTOs), and integrated test and checkout activities associatedwith the ISPE.

  • Support theIntegrated Test and Checkout (ITCO) plans being developed at the Cross-Programlevel.

  • Identify, develop,review, and/or approve requirements supporting integration and test, andcheckout events including Operational Maintenance Requirements and Specifications(OMRSs), Launch Commit Criteria (LCC), safety verifications, and requirementsin other released engineering artifacts.

  • Identify, describeand communicate potential risks related to the products, processes andinteractions in the V&V program.

Qualifications

Degree inMechanical,Aerospace, SystemsEngineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university is required.Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum 4 years of experience; Masters with at least 8 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience.

The candidate is also required to have:

  • Atleast 10 years of relevant experience in systems engineering and integration,launch vehicle definition, functional design, design integration, launchvehicle performance analyses, flight evaluation planning, requirementverification, and/or requirement validation.

  • Experience indeveloping systems requirements, verification strategies, and verificationplanning as well as facilitating the successful completion of verificationcompliance activities.

  • Experience withdefining and managing interfaces, interface requirements, and interfaceverification.

  • Knowledge ofcomponent level and integrated systems verification planning, as well asexperience in developing and delivering briefings to NASA program, test, andverification boards.

  • Familiarity withNASA Systems Engineering policies and procedures related to verification, andhave experience with using tools/systems to manage verification compliancedata.

  • Demonstratedexperience developing and delivering executive-level briefings, have excellentoral, written, and customer relation skills, and is proficient using MicrosoftOffice Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Personnel are required to be self-directed, effective team playersfamiliar with working in a dynamic work environment who are willing to assume aleadership role in this SLS verification, validation, and test planning effort.

It is desired that the candidate also possess the following:

  • An understanding andknowledge of the current SLS program and a working understanding of the SLSElement interfaces.

  • Experience workingacross organizational boundaries and engineering disciplines to identify andresolve vehicle integration issues.

  • Knowledge of launch vehicleprogrammatic planning processes and experience performing oversight of primecontractor hardware production, test, and certification efforts.

Essential Functions

Work Environment

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
