The Boeing Company Entry Level Software Engineer - International Space Station in Huntsville, Alabama


  • Boeing's Space Exploration organization is seeking a Software Engineer to join our team in Huntsville, AL. The qualified applicant will become part of Boeing's International Space Station (ISS) office, located on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, which supports NASA on strategy and policy on Space Exploration programs procured by the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).

  • The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest, most complex international scientific and engineering space project in history and our largest endeavor into space to date. Completed in 2011, the ISS is larger than an American football field including the end zones. The ISS serves as a test bed for building and maintaining large structures in space, for conducting science and technology research leading to discoveries that will benefit us here on Earth, and as a test bed for developments in future human space exploration.

  • Boeing is supporting a variety of capability enhancements that will enable use of the ISS to be extended to 2028. Those enhancements include a new communications system for visiting spacecraft, a new NASA docking system, lithium-ion batteries for the solar arrays, improved life support systems, enhanced Payload experiment capability, software and avionics upgrades. In addition, Boeing supports processing of the laboratory experiment racks to facilitate experiments in space as well as ground system to support payload development and testing prior to launch.


  • The successful applicant will work within the ISS Payload Flight and Ground System Software group under the ISS Program.

  • The applicant will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and performing testing of flight and simulation software releases for EXPRESS and EXPRESS derived racks, Ground Systems, configuration files, payload unique applications, other payload flight software, test tools, and lab equipment checkout used on the International Space Station.

  • Will participate in requirements definition and development, design, code, and test reviews, as required.

  • Will participate in and conduct peer reviews of test release products, as required.

  • Design, code, and test applications and executables to define requirements, and develop release documentation, as required.

  • Execute tests during informal and formal testing, and develop/release test reports, as required.

  • Document discrepancies and problems.

  • Participate in Test Open Records Review (TORRs) and Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs), as required.

  • Support process improvement initiatives to facilitate and expedite software development and test.

  • Install and process system and security service packages, as required.

  • Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    o developing solutions to routine technical problems; utilizing critical thinking and data analysis to identify software issues; and contribute independently to the completion of established tasks.

Basic Qualifications (Required):

  • This position requires the ability to obtain a US Security Clearance for which the US Government requires US Citizenship.

  • C, C , C#, Perl, Low level hardware programming/diagnostics.

  • Simulation and/or Real-Time software test and development experience.

  • The applicant should be proficient in the use of Excel, Word and Power Point.

  • The successful applicant must have strong communication skills, and are capable of working in a multi-tasking environment while supporting multiple activities concurrently.

  • The applicant must be capable of working with only moderate supervision.

  • The applicant must also have experience developing applications with Linux and Windows operating systems.

Assets (Preferred)

  • 1553 Bus experience

  • Software design life-cycle

  • CMMI process knowledge

  • Ethernet Development experience

  • Experience with the Agile development process

  • Experience with embedded software systems

  • Experience testing software applications

Typical Education / Experience:

Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
